Success does not tell us the complete story. We see men and women in flashy cars and expensive suits on the TV, every day. However, we have no idea of what some of them went through to grace the red carpet. In this article, we are going to explore some of the inspiring stories of men and women who have through their struggles become huge successes.

1. Oprah Winfrey

What challenges did she overcome?
She was born to an unwed mother who had a brief relationship with a stationed soldier. She grew up in dire poverty and was sexually and physically abused as a child. She became pregnant and gave birth to a child at age 14, who later passed away after two weeks.
Living in the public, Oprah Winfrey was dealt with a lot of criticisms about her racism, weight, and intrusive questions about her sexuality.

How did she overcome it?
In spite of her challenging childhood, Oprah persevered. She never let the challenges to affect her ambition and drive. She focused on her primary and secondary education. After winning a beauty pageant and later getting a chance to shine at a local radio station, Oprah knew she was made for the broadcast industry. Despite failing one crucial interview, she persevered and moved across the country to get a job as a television reporter. She was fired as she couldn’t adapt well to the job. However, she had gained sufficient experience to start a Morning Talk Show. The show would later explode with excellent ratings and Oprah was given the complete control over her OWN (Oprah Winfrey Show) show.

2. Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey is generally regarded as one of the best comedians to grace the big screen. He is famously known to make everyone (yes, everyone) laugh through high-grossing comedies such as Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, and Ace Ventura. His roles have a touch of humor in them and he performs them really well. It is like Jim was born to light up the world with an innate talent to put an incredible smile on everyone’s face. however, Jim Carrey was not always the green laughing man.

What challenges did he overcome?
Jim Carrey had his own fair share of struggle. He grew up in a low-income family, his father could barely keep his jobs and they lived in abject poverty. In order to help his family, Jim Carrey dropped out of high school at the age of 15 to get a job as a janitor. In his first attempt at comedy, he was booed off the stage by a bored audience who were not impressed by his comic stand-up at a club called Yuk Yuk’s in Toronto. He also failed at an audition for a part in the 1980/1981 season for the Saturday Night Live.

How did he overcome it?
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Jim Carrey talked about how he used the Law of Attraction by writing himself a $10 million check for “Acting Services Rendered”. Five years later, he received $10 million for his role in the blockbuster movie- Dumb and Dumber.

In 2004, Jim Carrey was included in the ‘Canadian Walk of Fame’ for his cinematic achievements. The ‘Maharishi University of Management’ in Iowa conferred upon him, an honorary doctorate in 2014. Jim Carrey has received several ‘Golden Globe’ nominations for his brilliant performances in films like ‘The Truman Show’, ‘Man on the Moon’, and ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’.

J.K Rowling is simply known as the woman who created Harry Potter. She is one of the best-selling authors today.

What challenges did he overcome?
JK Rowling’s story is a typical rag to riches story – from living on state benefits to becoming the multi-millionaire author. In 1992, J K Rowling moved to Portugal to teach English after falling in love with a man and getting married to him. She had a daughter but the marriage ended in divorce, barely after a year. She moved to Edinburgh, Scotland to be closer to her sister.

How did she overcome it?
Her life took a positive turn when she began writing furiously on an idea that came fully formed into her mind while on a train to Manchester from London. When she fully typed out the Harry Potter, the book was rejected a dozen times. As a matter of fact, she was penniless and she couldn’t afford a computer or even the cost of photocopying the 90,000-word novel, which led her to manually type out each version to send to publishers. The book was finally accepted when Bloomsbury, a small London publisher, gave it a second chance after the CEO’s eight-year-old daughter fell in love with it.

What has she achieved?
The Harry Potter series, now comprising of 7 books and 8 films, are worth billions of dollars. The series has become the highest-grossing film series as well as the best-selling series in history.

 

4. Stephen King

What is he known for?
Stephen King is American writer known for many critically-acclaimed novels that have been developed into blockbuster movies. King is undoubtedly the most loved horror novelist whose writings have never failed to incite fear, fright, and terror in the minds of his readers.

What challenges did he overcome?
His first movie, Carrie, was rejected 30 times before it was accepted for publication. At one point in time, Stephen King felt so discouraged that he just threw the manuscript away, only later to be retrieved by his wife who strongly believed in his dreams.

How did he overcome it?
In spite of the rejections that King faced, he kept on writing. At a point, the nail with which he used to hang his rejection letters could no longer hold the weight. He had to replace the nail with a spike. Nevertheless, even when he found a job as an English teacher at a public high school, Hampden Academy, he kept on writing.

What has he done?
Today, King has published over 50 novels and penned hundreds of short stories, in the process, he has sold over 350 million copies of his work.

 

5. Colonel (Harland) Sanders

Colonel Sanders was the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). He is widely popular for his iconic white suit and bow tie.

It wasn’t until age 62 that Colonel Sanders set out with a $105 social security check to pitch his chicken recipes local restaurants. Over 1000 people told him he was crazy but he didn’t give up. Before he became 62, Colonel Sanders did a variety of jobs including that of a railroad fireman, farm help, conductor, salesman and a soldier in the U.S Army, but found it difficult to keep a job for long.

 

How did he overcome it?
Eventually, a restaurant based out of Salt Lake City, Utah, became the first restaurant to accept Colonel Sanders’ unique chicken recipes. The restaurant tripled its sales within a year where 75% of that revenue was from the colonel’s chicken. The restaurant eventually became the first KFC franchise. He later franchised the KFC restaurants around the country.

What has he achieved?
Currently, there are over a billion of Colonel Sanders’ chickens served every year, in more than 80 countries. When he sold his share in 1964, the company already had 600 outlets nationwide and some abroad.
