New Degree Offered for Educators Outside the Classroom
Posted on August 4, 2016
So, you want to get an education degree, but you really don鈥檛 want to be a classroom teacher? The 91桃色 has the degree program for you.
鈥淢any students who desire to enroll in education without committing to a career in teaching, now have an option,鈥 said Dr. Susan Santoli, professor and director of graduate studies in the College of Education, about the new bachelor of science degree in educational studies. 鈥淭his new undergraduate major in educational studies has been created to offer students a variety of non-teaching career paths in education.鈥
The program will focus on learning and learning environments in non-traditional educational settings. Students who want to better understand knowledge and the transfer of knowledge and how it impacts society, will benefit from majoring in this program.
鈥淭here are many opportunities in the work force that are in the field of education that are not necessarily in K-12 education,鈥 said Dr. Andrea Kent, dean of education at South. 鈥淎 degree in educational studies from 91桃色 will open a world of opportunities in the educational arena.鈥
Santoli first thought about implementing this new program at South after attending a workshop about recruitment and retention. She knew this would be a good program to add to the College.
鈥淚f you want to do presentations, facilitate workshops, or deliver instruction, this is the major for you,鈥 Santoli explained. 鈥淥ur students will graduate from this program and not be in a traditional classroom. They may work at the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, serve in ministry, as an academic advisor, counselor, recruiter or volunteer, or work with other non-profits.鈥
This non-certification major is also for those who would like to pursue careers in public service, at museums and in human development. However, if a student wants to return to South and earn a certification in education, he or she can take additional courses.
