Suggested Course Selection for Various Career Interests

A degree in Biology is very flexible and so can be customized largely to meet your specific needs. Below we list some guidelines and links for those you interested in health-related, as well as for those of you interested in non-medical biology areas. Remember that your departmental advisor can help you to choose within these lists as to which will best meet your specific career goals.
Pre-health Professions
Generic Pre-health majors:
Biology majors planning a career in medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, or other pre-professional fields should follow the recommended curriculum for biology majors.
A year of physics, Calculus I, and one or more semesters of genetics and cell biology are strongly recommended for pre-health professional students.

Thinking about graduate school...
For student planning to pursue graduate education in the sciences, you should consider PH 114/115, MA 125 and ST210 as the choices for courses within general biology requirements. You should consult with graduate programs of interest to pre-requisite courses specific to those programs. You may well be able to work them into your undergraduate curriculum while here at South.
